There are many different reasons why you may need to take a leave of absence. DePaul is committed to supporting you during these times. This section is designed to help you determine which leave and benefits programs meet your immediate needs.
Types of Leave
Qualifying faculty and staff have many programs in place to support them during times of illness and injury. The university also offers support for life events such as the birth or adoption of a child. The pursuit of professional development opportunities may also be aided by a leave.
The following list includes each type of leave of absence at the university. Current DePaul employees can access the links provided for more detailed information.

Sick Time can be used when an employee is unable to work due to illness, injury or preventative care services.

Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides an unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons. FMLA may be used for your own serious health condition or to take care of an immediate family member with an illness or injury. Short-term Disability provides continuation of income and benefits for periods of time when an employee is unable to work due to a medical condition. Click on the Short-term Disability link for more information on how to file a claim.

Maternity Leave allows an employee to request 100% paid 6 or 8 weeks of short-term disability and an additional 2 weeks of Parental Leave. Click on the Maternity Leave link for more information on how to file a claim.

Parental Leave provides paid leave to enable an employee to care for and bond with a newborn, newly adopted child, or a foster child. Click on the Parental Leave link for more information on how to file a claim.

Long-term Disability offers continued income in the event an eligible employee is unable to work due to a qualifying disability. Click on the Long-term Disability link for more information on how to file a claim.

Personal Leave provides an unpaid leave of absence for personal or family needs of an urgent nature, educational opportunities, or professional development.

Voluntary Unpaid Time-Off allows employees to request authorized voluntary unpaid time away from work, without pay, but with benefits.

Bereavement leave provides up to three (3) days of paid leave for the death of an immediate family member; paid leave to attend the funeral of someone other than an immediate family member is limited to one (1) day, the day of the funeral.

The Family Bereavement Leave Act provides eligible employees who suffer the loss of a covered family member with up to a maximum of ten (10) unpaid days of leave.

Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA) provides an employee who is a victim of domestic or sexual violence, or who has a family or household member who is a victim of domestic or sexual violence, with up to twelve (12) weeks of unpaid leave per any twelve (12) month period to address issues arising from domestic or sexual violence.
