Lactation Support Guidelines
In 2001, Illinois enacted the Nursing Mothers in the Workplace Act (NMWA) which, in summary, requires employers to provide nursing women with reasonable time each day to express breast milk. In addition, employers must provide nursing women a private room. A bathroom stall is not an acceptable private location.
DePaul University will make every effort to provide the appropriate accommodation for its faculty, staff and student employees with a need to utilize this benefit. It has been determined that each Dean and Vice President's unit will be responsible for providing the necessary accommodation for any request made within their area. Each Dean and Vice President may choose to select a designee within their area to coordinate and manage this process to ensure that the university remains in compliance.
Specific requirements include the following:
- The employee should request time and space from their manager; whether verbal or in writing, it should be handled promptly. (HR recommends that managers respond within 72 hours.)
- Departments should provide reasonable time each day to an employee who needs to express breast milk. If possible, the break time should run concurrently with any break time already provided to the employee.
- Departments must make reasonable efforts to provide a room or other private location, in close proximity to the work area. The room should be clean and provide a chair, table, electric outlets, and a door with a lock.
If the above accommodations are not possible, or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Office of Human Resources at (312) 362-8500 or hr@depaul.edu.
In the event of an emergency, please contact Public Safety at (312) 362-8400 on the Loop Campus or (773) 325-7777 on the Lincoln Park Campus.
