Room Décor
Residents are encouraged to personalize living areas. When decorating units, residents should be mindful of the opinions and sensibilities of roommates, fellow building residents, and visitors. Residents must follow the guidelines below and the expectations in the housing agreement.
Residents are prohibited from:
- Posting or applying any items to either side of the unit door or on the actual door, or from obstructing the hallway in any way
- Using duct tape or double-sided tape to post items to the door frame
- Painting a unit or making other alterations that affect the current condition of the walls, ceiling, window coverings or flooring
- Posting or hanging items from the ceiling or on residence hall windows
- Hanging items from, tampering with, or altering fire safety equipment (i.e., do not hang anything from sprinkler pipes or sprinkler heads)
- Attaching anything to the walls, ceiling, or furniture with nails, tacks, screws, or other hardware
- Applying LED strip lights to walls or furniture using the adhesive on the strip as it will damage the paint or finish upon removal
Residents may:
- Post items on the door frame using masking tape, painter's tape, or poster putty. (However, residents are still unable to display anything directly on the door itself.)
- Hang items on walls using masking tape, painter’s tape, poster putty or self-adhesive strips or hooks (such as Command brand) as long as the tape does not damage the paint upon removal
- Apply LED strip lights using non-damaging adhesives such as poster putty, painter’s tape, or removable adhesive (such as Command brand)
Display of Materials
Displays that advertise commercial products or services; advocate the use of alcohol or drugs; are discriminatory; unlawfully harass by abusing, assailing, intimidating, demeaning, victimizing or having the effect of creating a hostile environment based on any of the protected characteristics in the university’s Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment policy or are not otherwise in keeping with the university’s mission are prohibited and may be removed at any time. Contact the residence director before displaying materials that may be questionable. Staff will determine whether a display needs to be removed. Items that are not taken down when requested may be removed by university staff.
Furnishings
All campus housing at DePaul University comes furnished with a bed, a bed guard rail, a desk with a chair, a dresser, a closet or compartmentalized closet, and a recycling tote. Apartments also come with living and dining area furnishings, as space permits. Residents can bring personal furniture and accessories to units and to move or set up university-provided or personal furniture within the unit. All roommates must agree with the furniture arrangement. If additional furniture is added to the unit, particularly used or upholstered furniture, all surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned, to avoid bringing pests into the building, and may be subject to Housing’s approval for health and safety. The following guidelines also apply:
- Any non-university mattresses are expressly prohibited, due to fire safety standards.
- All university-provided furniture and equipment must remain in the room or apartment as inventoried upon check-in; no storage outside of the unit is available. University furniture cannot leave the unit to be stored elsewhere.
- All furniture must only be used in the way it was intended.
- All beds are XL twin (80” long), except Centennial and McCabe which have standard twin (75” long) due to space constraints in the bedrooms.
- All traditional halls have adjustable height / loftable bed ends that have the capability to be raised up to 60 inches. Campus apartments with loftable bed ends are Courtside, Sheffield Square, Sanctuary and Townhomes.
- After adjusting the bed height, residents are responsible for ensuring that the bed is properly reassembled. Assistance may be requested by placing a work order on the Housing website.
- Residents who adjust their own bed heights must ensure all four (4) corners of the bed springs platform are completely and securely affixed to the hooks in the bed ends, otherwise the bed may not be stable and may cause injury. DePaul University is not responsible for damage or injury caused by improper adjustments.
- All window treatments (mini blinds) must remain in place and cannot be altered or removed; students may hang decorative window treatments in addition to the blinds as long as the additional decorative window treatments are attached using a tension rod or removable adhesive strips that do not cause damage to the paint or wall surfaces. Attaching additional window treatments with nails, tacks, screws, or any other method that causes damage are not allowed.
- Shower curtains may be hung in addition to the university-provided curtain in suite-style and apartment bathrooms. However, university-provided shower curtains must always stay hanging in shower stalls as they are properly sized and keep water from splashing or escaping onto the bathroom floor. Residents with private or suite-style bathrooms are responsible for regularly cleaning both personal and university-provided shower curtains throughout the year to remove and prevent growth of mildew.
- Furniture and accessories in lounges may not be brought into residents’ rooms.
Residential Rental Returns
A MicroFridge is a fridge, freezer, and microwave built into one and may be rented through DePaul’s approved vendor,
My MicroFridge. Residents of LeCompte Hall, Munroe Hall, Ozanam Hall, Seton Hall, and University Hall may visit
mymicrofridge.com to rent a MicroFridge.* If these items are rented, residents are required to follow certain guidelines.
MicroFridge Units
- A rental fridge/microwave combo unit (MicroFridge) should never be moved to a room other than the one it was rented for, unless a resident moves to a new unit during the year.
- MicroFridges may only be used in LeCompte Hall, Munroe Hall, Ozanam Hall, Seton Hall, and University Hall.*
- At the end of the academic year, residents must properly prepare the rental unit for pick-up. This includes removing all food contents, cleaning the inside and outside of the fridge, freezer, and microwave, and ensuring the unit is unplugged and defrosted.
Fees may be assessed if units are not thoroughly cleaned, defrosted, and properly prepared for pick-up. For more information, visit the
MyMicroFridge website.
*Note: Corcoran rooms each come with a MicroFridge unit provided by DePaul, so residents in Corcoran do not need to rent or bring a fridge or microwave. Residents must completely defrost, clean, and dry the interior of the fridge, freezer, and microwave before move out.
Pets
Pets are not allowed on campus or in campus housing. Having an unapproved pet and failing to remove it from campus housing is a direct violation of the housing agreement and will result in additional fees and may result in the termination of a resident's housing agreement.
Residents may request having a service animal or emotional support animal through the Center for Students with Disabilities but must await DePaul Housing’s approval before bringing a service or emotional support animal into an assigned campus room or apartment. For more information, visit the
Service Animals and Assistance Animals on Campus policy.
Personal Property
Residents should store valuables in secure places, be watchful of suspicious behavior and lock unit doors while at home and when leaving the unit. As noted in the housing agreement’s
terms and conditions, the university assumes no responsibility and provides no insurance or financial protection for students’ individual property. If items are stolen from a residential unit left unlocked or if items are damaged because of a facility or building issue (a ruptured water pipe, bathroom plumbing emergency, pests, vandalism, etc.) the university will not pay to replace individual property. Students are encouraged to secure coverage via their parent or guardian’s homeowners or property insurance OR through GradGuard’s College Renters Insurance Program. See the
Housing Portal for more information. By not carrying protection while on campus, students understand that they are fully responsible for their individual property and any damage caused while on university property. If theft or damage occurs, notify Public Safety to file a report. Public Safety can also assist with contacting the Chicago Police Department if necessary.
Safes
Portable or electronic safes are allowed. However, the safe must not exceed 10”H x 14”D x 19¼”W and may not weigh more than 40 pounds. Safes may not be bolted to the floor, furniture or any other surface belonging to the university. Upon reasonable request by a university official, the safe must be opened for inspection. Failure to do so would be considered a violation of university policy.
Storage
The university is not able to provide additional storage space outside of the residential unit. All provided furniture must remain in the unit and cannot be stored offsite or moved between rooms or residents.
Windows & Screens
Windows, window bars and screens are constructed to keep people and objects from falling out and to keep people and insects from getting in. Based on that:
- Tampering with or taking out windows, screens or window bars is prohibited.
- Throwing, dropping, or launching objects from a window is prohibited.
- In addition to student conduct action, violations of these policies may result in fees for work and materials being assessed to residents of affected rooms or apartments.
Closing Windows
To help conserve energy and keep the building cool and dry, windows should be closed while the air conditioning is running and when it is humid outside. Leaving windows open causes higher energy usage and moisture condensation.
