All-Gender Housing

All-Gender Housing at DePaul University refers to housing whereby residents, regardless of sex, gender, or gender identity, are permitted to share a room or suite in selected areas of DePaul’s residence halls. It is intended to be a positive and respectful option for all residents who chose this opportunity. Moreover, the All-Gender Housing option acknowledges all identities and preferences, and ensures a safe and comfortable environment for all residents.

This option is now available in the 2025-26 Housing Agreement.

Most of our residential accommodations limit living arrangements to same-sex (male/female) roommate pairings, which may not meet the needs of some residents. Our All-Gender Housing option will allow residents with gender expansive identities, who identify as transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary, as just a few examples, the ability to share a housing unit with a student of any gender or gender expression. All-Gender Housing options help further develop a residential community that is positive, respectful, and inclusive for all residents.

Our department offers All-Gender Housing because we are committed to providing safe, inclusive, and supportive living experiences for all DePaul residents living on campus.

All-Gender Housing is not exclusively for LGBTQIA+ students; it is for any student who wants to live with people with whom they feel comfortable—no matter their gender. Any student who selects the All-Gender Housing option in the housing agreement and agrees to the standards for this preference will be welcome to live on campus in an all-gender housing unit. Roommates, suitemates, and apartment mates are students who elect this option and embrace the opportunity of living with a person of any gender.

Students who want to be part of all-gender campus housing must email housing@depaul.edu to opt in. Students who do not make this request will live in same-gender campus housing.

All-Gender Housing units are across Lincoln Park Campus as well as units at University Center in the Loop. This may include specific suites, floors, and apartments to create a welcoming all-gender community.

All-Gender Housing is not intended for romantic couples and, as a rule, we strongly advise against selecting All-Gender Housing for this purpose. DePaul Housing strongly encourages students to reconsider living with a person with whom they are romantically involved, regardless of whether it is a same-sex or different-sex relationship. Some relationships are ready for this step while others are not, and there can be serious challenges for both residents should the relationship end.
