All-Gender Housing

Beginning with our 2023-24 housing placements*, DePaul Housing will offer an option for All-Gender Housing. This option will allow students to live within the same room, suite, or apartment regardless of a person’s gender and is intended to be a positive and respectful accommodation for all residents who chose this opportunity.

*This option will become available within the Housing Agreement beginning January 2023.

As part of DePaul Housing’s vision, we aspire to be a valued and vital partner to offer our residents a rewarding experience that will enrich their lives academically, socially and culturally. With this vision, along with our mission, DePaul Housing is beginning the process of offering our residents an All-Gender Housing option.

All-Gender Housing at DePaul University refers to housing whereby residents, regardless of sex; gender; or gender identity; are permitted to share a room or suite in selected areas of DePaul’s residences halls. The intention of this policy is to provide additional campus housing options that take into consideration all identities and preferences, and to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all residents.

DePaul Housing is committed to providing safe, inclusive and supportive living experiences for all residents living in campus housing. Most of our residential accommodations limit living arrangements to same-gender (male/female) roommate pairings, which may not meet the needs of some residents. Our All-Gender Housing option will allow residents who identify as transgender; gender non-conforming; cisgender and similar, the ability to share a housing unit with any gender or gender expression. All-Gender Housing options help further develop a residential community that is positive, respectful and inclusive for all residents.

All-Gender Housing is not just for LGBTQ+ people; it is for anyone who wants to live with people with whom they feel comfortable—no matter their gender. Students who elect this option must be open to living with a person of any gender.

All-Gender Housing is not intended for romantic couples and, as a rule, we advise against selecting All-Gender Housing for this purpose. DePaul Housing and Residential Education strongly encourages students to reconsider living with a person with whom they are romantically involved, regardless of whether it is a same-sex or different-sex relationship. Some relationships are ready for this step while others are not, and there can be serious challenges for both residents should the relationship end.
