About

The Office of Multicultural Student Success (OMSS) works to improve the retention and graduation rates of students of color and first-generation students, students who demonstrate financial need, undocumented students and students with marginalized genders and sexualities. The office facilitates opportunities for engagement, advocates for students on campus and is able to provide resources that aid in their successful progress through graduation. These resources include four identity-based student centers (LGBTQA, Black, Asian/Pacific-Islander/Desi-American (APIDA) and Latinx), intersectional identity programming, undocumented student resources, advising/counseling, career readiness/graduate school programming, first-generation college student support and scholarship information.

The Office of Multicultural Student Success seeks to cultivate belongingness, retention and persistence to graduation for students of color, students who demonstrate financial need, first-generation college students, undocumented immigrant students, and students with marginalized genders and sexualities. ​​

To envision and model strategies of naming, navigating, and resisting the structural systems of power, privilege, and oppression.

To reimagine the DePaul experience for students in our target populations. 

As ​a result of engaging with OMSS programs and services, students will be able to:

  1. Explain why / how historically marginalized social identities are an asset
  2. Demonstrate a commitment to identity-consciousness
  3. Articulate how social identity-based inequality influences their lived experience
  4. Describe the realities of various social identities and cultures
  5. Describe how social identities of historically marginalized groups influences personal and academic success
  6. Articulate which campus resources are relevant to their academic needs
  7. Articulate the transferable skills from their positional experience to post-graduate opportunities​​

OMSS offers job opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Undergraduate

Peer Mentoring:

STARS Peer Mentors are sophomore, junior and senior level students who are partnered with freshmen who are first-generation, low-income or students of color for one full academic year. During that year, the mentor serves as a guide to assist their mentee in navigating the transition from high school to college at DePaul.

Men of Color (MOC) Peer Mentors are junior and senior level students who work with a cohort of 30 MOC freshman/sophomore male students during the academic year. They help the men to build community, navigate the institution, develop a network and prepare for leadership and career opportunities.

Graduate

Graduate Assistantships:

The Graduate Assistants (GAs) are paraprofessional staff with a high level of responsibility and autonomy. OMSS offers several graduate assistantships for students pursuing their graduate degrees at DePaul University. GA’s assist with program development, lead workshops, support program participants, mentor student staff, etc. OMSS GAs support the following initiatives:

  • Students Together Are Reaching Success (STARS)
  • Generation Success
  • Men of Color (MOC)
  • OMSS Scholarship Program
  • Undocumented Student Support

Applications for all graduate positions are available during the Spring Quarter.
