"Counseling" may not be familiar to many international students because it is not a common practice in some countries and cultures. In the United States, it is common to discuss one’s concerns with a counselor as a process of dealing with personal stress and difficulties.
Some international students may think that counseling is only for people who have serious psychological problems. In fact, you do not have to have psychological problems to benefit from DePaul University Counseling and Psychological Services (UCAPS). DePaul UCAPS staff can help students learn new coping skills and focus on helping students achieve their full potential and fulfilment through counseling.
For instance, it is not unusual for many international students to experience difficulties with cultural adjustment, homesickness, friendship and relationship concerns, academic and family issues, etc. Our professional counseling staff will work with you confidentially to help you through these difficulties. Such confidentiality means that what students choose to share with their professional counselor is kept private. This right is protected by law.
When might you consider counseling?
You may benefit from talking to a counselor when you are feeling overwhelmed by life, anxious about school, struggling in your relationship or just need to better manage your stress.
