DePaul BlueKey Account, Password, and MFA

I need help with...

DePaul BlueKey Account Setup

Watch out for a message to the email address you provided to DePaul. This message will notify you when your BlueKey account is ready to be set up. It will also include a link to setup your BlueKey account.

New DePaul account users must set up their BlueKey login credentials (username@depaul.edu and password) and MFA to access DePaul systems, applications, and class resources.

Need to reset your password? If you have already setup your BlueKey login, you no longer need to follow these instructions to reset your password. Instead, please view the password reset instructions.

BlueKey Login Credentials

Step 1: After receiving a message that your BlueKey account is ready, click the link in the email for your BlueKey account setup. You will be asked to verify some personal information. Your DePaul email (BlueM@il) will be yourusername@depaul.edu.

Step 2: Once you have your BlueKey username, you will be asked to verify your identity. Once you have verified your identity, you can set your password.

BlueKey Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Step 3: After setting your password, you will be directed to set up BlueKey MFA. Multi-factor authentication will be required to access DePaul apps, systems, email, and to reset your password if you happen to forget it. The vast majority of account users will use the Microsoft Authenticator app on their smartphone as their primary authentication method.

This extra layer of authentication makes your accounts and the university more secure.

Step 4: Add backup verification methods to MFA. Don't get locked out! Registering backup MFA methods makes it much easier to access your accounts if something goes wrong. Add backup verification and avoid login issues when the Help Desk is closed.

Although the Help Desk can assist with password resets, the Help Desk isn't open 24/7. Adding backup methods might be a little annoying to do, but it can save a lot of headaches in the future.

Password Requirements

Passwords must be a minimum of 16 characters in length and avoid common password terms or phrases. Consider using highly secure passphrase techniques when creating your unique DePaul password. When creating your password in the system, you will be notified if your password meets security requirements.

Password Issues

Self-service password reset page (must have registered for MFA and have 2 backup verification methods)

In order to reset your password without calling the Help Desk, you must answer YES TO BOTH of these questions:

  1. Have you already registered for BlueKey MFA (multi-factor authentication)?
  2. Do you have access to two of your MFA verification methods (phone call, phone text, or Microsoft Authenticator app, secondary phone, Authenticator app on secondary device)?

If YES TO BOTH, please visit this BlueKey password reset page and follow the steps to verify your identity and reset your password.

If NO TO EITHER, please contact the Help Desk during Help Desk hours. Since the Help Desk is only available during limited times, please consider adding enough secure verification methods to be able to reset your own password.

After receiving an email message that your BlueKey account is ready, visit the link in the message to setup your BlueKey account. Follow the steps to setup your account.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Issues

For most users, the Microsoft Authenticator app on a smartphone will be their primary MFA verification method. Here's what to do if you can't access Microsoft Authenticator and/or your phone.

If you've setup backup methods (another phone, another device, etc.), you should be able to login:

  1. At the login screen, enter your BlueM@il email address (or username) and password.
  2. On the authentication page, click "I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now" (or whatever your primary verification method is).
  3. Choose a backup method to verify your credentials.

If you don't have backup verification methods besides your MFA device:

If you know your DePaul email address and password, but haven't registered for MFA yet, please visit bluekey.depaul.edu/multifactorsetup. Follow the steps to register for MFA and add backup verification methods.

1) If possible don't delete the Microsoft Authenticator app on your old phone BEFORE registering the app on your new phone. If this option is a possibility, you can verify your identity when setting up the new device on your old phone. Not an option? Don't worry.

2) Assuming that you will have the same phone number on the new phone, make sure that you have additional verification methods added to your BlueKey account, especially methods like phone call and phone text associated with your current phone number. Double check these settings at blueKey.depaul.edu/multifactor.

Not sure what to do? Make sure to contact the Help Desk during their hours of operation before switching phones. The Help Desk can guide you through the process.
