External Study Abroad

Students are strongly encouraged to participate on a DePaul-sponsored study abroad program as these programs allow students to earn resident credit, use their financial aid, are incorporated into university systems, and are vetted. If you choose to pursue an external study abroad program, please review the important considerations and steps below.

Programs Not Eligible for External Study Abroad

Study abroad programs for which DePaul offers a sponsored program are not eligible for transfer credit because DePaul already offers a sponsored program with those courses for resident credit.

Guidance for Students Planning an External Program

1. Complete the Supplemental Transfer Credit Process

If you plan to earn transfer credit through an external program, you must follow the supplemental transfer credit process outlined by your college academic advising office.

  • Questions about how courses apply to your degree should be directed to your academic advisor.
  • Remember: Credits earned externally will transfer in as transfer credit, not resident credit.

2. Confirm Accreditation of the Host Institution

To receive transfer credit, your program must provide an official transcript from an accredited institution.

  • If the program is offered through a non-accredited institution, you must obtain a transcript from their accredited school of record.
  • If your program contact cannot guarantee an official transcript from an accredited institution, do not choose that program.
3. Register Your Travel with Global Engagement

Per DePaul’s Student Travel Policy, all students participating in external study abroad programs for transfer credit are required to register in the Global Engagement Travel Registration Database.

Completing this registration allows Study Abroad to:
  • Provide health and safety monitoring and support during your travel.
  • Enroll you in DePaul’s required travel health and accident insurance (approx. $45/month, billed to your student account).
There are no additional DePaul fees for participating in an external program for transfer credit.

4. Understand Financial Aid Limitations
Students participating in external programs cannot use:
  • DePaul scholarships
  • DePaul grants
  • Federal or state financial aid
You must pay the program directly out-of-pocket.

Before you leave, you must notify Financial Aid (finaid1@depaul.edu) that you will be participating in an external program so they can pause your aid for the term you will be away. Upon return, you may contact Financial Aid to have your aid reinstated for the following term.
