Credit Card Declined- 3-21-22

Example of malicious email regarding a declined credit card.
On March 21st, 2022, a message phishing email was sent out from compromised DePaul University email accounts.

The malicious email purports that the organization that handles credit card billing for the University/College is unable to charge your credit card. The recipient is asked to click on a link and enter their credit card information.

It is always important to remain vigilant when handling emails, even when it appears to come from a DePaul email address or other official looking email address. Email addresses can be spoofed. Compromised email accounts (e.g. if a fellow DePaul community member fell victim to phishing) are often used to target the community. Keeping your DePaul account secure helps keep the entire community secure.

Some indicators that this email is malicious:
- Grammatical errors
- A link to a non-DePaul website
- Urgency in the tone of the email

Anyone who has entered their credit card information into this scam, should immediately contact their credit card company.
