Spring Quarter FAQs

This webpage is for information pertaining to Spring Quarter housing, as well as events leading up to Spring Quarter, like Spring Break. Please note that your plans for Spring Break may impact the start of your Spring Quarter on campus. Read details below carefully.

Spring Break

Yes, you may remain on campus during Spring Break (March 22-28). In fact, DePaul highly recommends you stay on campus for the health and safety of yourself and others within our community. We will also make sure you have the ability to access important campus resources, like dining, during the break.

You are welcome to come and go as you please, but are discouraged from traveling to another state on the City of Chicago travel restriction list at any point over the break. If you spend time in a restricted state for 24 hours or more, you will be required to quarantine once you return to your unit. Staff will closely track building check-in and check-out activity at all times.

Should you choose to stay on campus, please indicate your plans for Spring Break in the Spring Break Plans form no later than Friday, March 5.

Travel during Spring Break and Spring Quarter is unsafe and unfavorable at this time. However, students are ultimately allowed to leave their on-campus residence and stay elsewhere for Spring Break.

Those who spend their break in an orange “Avoid Travel” state on the City of Chicago travel restriction list (excluding Illinois) must begin quarantine upon their return to campus. We will not accept a negative COVID-19 test taken prior to arrival in Chicago in lieu of the quarantine out of an abundance of caution. The quarantine lasts 10 days, but may end sooner if students participate in on-campus COVID-19 testing and receive a negative test result.

Should you choose to travel, please indicate your plans for Spring Break in the Spring Break Plans form no later than Friday, March 5. We also encourage you to review the Emergency Travel Order and Quarantine and Isolation Guide to understand what is expected of you during quarantine.

COVID-19 testing will be made available at the Lincoln Park Student Center beginning in mid-March and will continue through the Spring Quarter. We are asking all students, even those who do NOT travel, to participate in this testing at the start of the Spring Quarter. Please review the COVID-19 Testing Guidelines section on this page for more information.

An email will be sent to all on-campus residents with test dates and appointment instructions. Residents who live at University Center (Loop campus) will be provided a mail-in test kit.


Spring Quarter Move-In (New Residents)

All new Spring Quarter residents must select a March 19 or March 20 move-in appointment on myhousing.depaul.edu. If you are arriving from an "Avoid Travel" state on the City of Chicago travel restriction list (excluding Illinois), must quarantine in your on-campus unit, which begins on your move-in date. If you are a Lincoln Park resident, please read the Spring Move-In and Quarantine Guide in advance to understand what is expected of you. University Center residents will be emailed separate move-in instructions.

As a new resident from an "Avoid Travel" state, you will be required to quarantine in your on-campus unit from your move-in date until the morning of Tuesday, March 30. However, you may be released from quarantine sooner if you receive a negative test COVID-19 test result during Spring Break. We strongly encourage you to read through the Spring Move-In and Quarantine Guide for full details.

Lincoln Park residents must schedule an appointment on March 23 or March 25 for a saliva-based COVID-19 test; please review the COVID-19 Testing Guidelines section on this webpage for more information. University Center residents will be offered an at-home COVID-19 test kit the week of Spring Break to avoid the risk of exposure and spread when traveling between the Loop campus and Lincoln Park campus.


COVID-19 Testing Guidelines

DePaul is conducting saliva-based COVID-19 testing on campus at the Lincoln Park Student Center beginning Tuesday, March 9 with the following schedule:
  • Tuesdays from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Testing is by appointment only. You will not be charged for testing and do not need to provide proof of insurance. We are asking all students, even those who do NOT travel, to participate in this testing.

We are partnering with SHIELD IL to provide this testing and need you to complete the following steps to confirm your COVID-19 test:

1. Complete the DePaul and SHIELD IL COVID-19 test waiver form. There is no need to fill out the waiver form again if you choose to schedule more than one test.

2. Create an account on the SHIELD IL portal. You should have received an email from NO-REPLY@ILLINOIS.edu. If the email is not in your inbox, check your deleted items or spam folder. Follow directions from that email to create an account on the portal. Please note:

Use your local, Illinois zip code.

- If you live on the Lincoln Park campus, use 60614

- If you live at University Center, use 60605

The activation code emailed from SHIELD IL expires after 30 days, or 5 incorrect attempts, when entering information.

If you are having issues activating your account, you may call the SHIELD IL Patient Technical Support Call center at (217) 265-6059.

3. Schedule a testing appointment. You must schedule an appointment prior to each saliva-based COVID-19 test. Only choose times on Tuesdays from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. or Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Though the SHIELD IL portal will show a much larger range of times available, DO NOT select appointments outside of the days/times outlined above. We will continue to evaluate testing times and may adjust in the future.

4. Bring your DePaul ID with you to your testing appointment. Testing will occur at the Lincoln Park Student Center, Room 120AB. Enter through the glass doors on Sheffield Avenue. DO NOT use the revolving doors on the corner of Sheffield and Belden. Follow the signs to the set of glass doors just south of the revolving doors.

5. Test results will be delivered to the portal within 12-24 hours. 

You must fill out the COVID-19 report about myself form and carefully review the Quarantine and Isolation Guide for next steps. A contact tracer will reach out and prepare you to isolate on campus.


Room Selection and Returning for Next Year

Room Selection is a housing process that takes place in the spring for continuing DePaul students (i.e., rising sophomores and upperclassmen) who are interested in living on campus the following year.
