Freshman Orientation

The Office of New Student & Family Engagement implements new student orientation to aid in the transition of students and families into the university. The information provided here is designed to make students feel confident and excited as they begin their first quarter at DePaul!

Freshman orientation includes two required portions: an academic advising appointment and a Premiere DePaul orientation session. Together these orientation portions provide students with the tools for a successful first year.

When an admitted student registers for their academic advising appointment, they will have the option to choose an online or in-person meeting. This appointment will last approximately one hour and includes course registration.

Premiere DePaul orientation must be attended in-person. The program includes an introduction to DePaul's campus, important resources for success, and the opportunity to meet other new students. Admitted students will attend a two-day overnight program. Parents and family are welcome at Premiere DePaul.

Yes, attendance at all portions of orientation is required. This is how all first time DePaul students register for their first quarter of classes. Orientation enables you to learn more about the requirements of your college program, meet with an academic advisor, register for classes, interact with current DePaul students, and find out more about being a student at DePaul.

During the advising appointment portion of orientation, you will meet with an advisor from your college. This meeting will be the first of many advisor meetings you will have as a student at DePaul and will focus on getting you set up with classes for your first quarter. While there will not be time to dive into your graduation plan, once you start at DePaul you will be matched with your permanent advisor and can begin those conversations.

To help you prepare for advising appointment and course registration we recommend reviewing the registration and degree planning tools available here.

Students who take action early and select an earlier orientation date do have an advantage when it comes to selecting classes. While every student will leave their academic advising appointment with a complete class schedule with classes that will fulfill Liberal Studies or major requirements, the greatest selection of course offerings will be available to those who attend orientation early.
