Transfer Student Orientation

The Office of New Student & Family Engagement implements new student orientation to aid in the transition of students and families into the university. The information provided here is designed to make students feel confident and excited as they begin their first quarter at DePaul!

Transition DePaul is our mandatory orientation program for incoming transfer and adult students, and consists of both an online component and on-campus experience. The first component is the online orientation and is intentionally designed to help students familiarize themselves with the tools needed to succeed and to prepare for on-campus orientation. We recognize that our transfer students have prior college experience, so the online orientation focuses on what is unique about DePaul.

Upon completion of the online orientation, students will register for our mandatory on-campus orientation program. During this half-day on-campus orientation, students will meet an academic advisor from their college and register for the upcoming quarter. By offering components of Transition DePaul online, we hope to provide students a flexible learning environment and a shortened time commitment once on campus.

  1. Complete the Required Placement Process. At DePaul, students complete their required placement process online before registering for on-campus orientation. To complete the placement process, log in to Blue Demon Domain with your user ID and password and select Palcement Process for the Next Steps checklist. Please note – it can take up to two business days for placement tests to process.

  2. Complete Online Orientation. To best prepare for your on-campus experience, you will first complete an online orientation. The online modules will provide you with information about the university and prepare you for advising and registration. To complete, log in to Blue Demon Domain with your user ID and password and select online orientation from the Next Steps checklist. Please note – it takes approximately 24 hours to process your completion of online orientation before you can register for on-campus orientation.

  3. Register for On-Campus Orientation. One or two business days after you complete both the placement process and virtual orientation, you can register for on-campus orientation. To register, log in to Blue Demon Domain with your user ID and password and select New Student Orientation from the Next Steps checklistNote – registration for orientation closes 5-7 days before the program begins.

  4. Receive Your Confirmation Details. Once we receive your Transition DePaul reservation, a confirmation email will be sent to you with the date, time and location of your session. If you do not receive a confirmation email within 24 hours, please email orientation@depaul.eduDo NOT make any travel arrangements prior to receipt of the confirmation email.

The online orientation will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. You can leave the online orientation module at any time; we will remember where you left off. Online orientation must be completed in its entirety before you can register for on-campus orientation.

During your on-campus orientation, you will have the opportunity to meet with an advisor from your college. This meeting will be the first of many advisor meetings you will have as a student at DePaul and will focus on getting you set up with classes for your first quarter. While there won’t be time to dive into your graduation plan, once you start at DePaul you will be matched with your permanent advisor and can begin those conversations.

To help you prepare for your advising and registration during Transition DePaul, we recommend:

  • Complete the mandatory online orientation
  • Reviewing registration and degree planning tools available here.

Before attending on-campus orientation, you are required to submit your official, final transcript(s) to the Office of Admission. Your academic advisor can help you better select classes if your final transcript information has been evaluated before you attend orientation.

The Transition DePaul on-campus orientation program begins at 9:00 a.m. and will end by 2:30 p.m. There are several mandatory sessions for students, including your assigned advising and registration appointment, so it’s critical that you arrive on campus no later than 9:30 a.m. Several sessions offered during on-campus orientation are optional. Our hope is to provide you with a flexible learning environment and shortened time commitment on campus.

The on-campus orientation program consists of:

  • A formal university welcome

  • Information about financial aid and financial resources

  • A pre-advising meeting with your college

  • Advising and registration

  • An opportunity to attend sessions about university resources

  • Optional campus tour

  • Optional one-on-one financial aid counseling

Students who take action early and select an earlier on-campus orientation date do have an advantage when it comes to selecting classes. While every student will leave on-campus orientation with a complete class schedule with classes that will fulfill Liberal Studies or major requirements, the greatest selection of course offerings will be available to those who attend on-campus orientation early.

Students who are from out of state, outside of the U.S. or with previous commitments should reserve their spot in the most convenient on-campus orientation session and be assured that they will still obtain the classes that they need.

The anticipated fee for Transition DePaul is $75. It is automatically assessed and included on your first quarter tuition statement at DePaul. The fee is nonrefundable.

If a student demonstrates financial need, it is possible to receive a fee waiver by submitting a request via the waiver request form: https://go.depaul.edu/WaiverRequest

This request must be made before the first day of classes of the first quarter that a student is enrolled.

Please note, the Office of New Student & Family Engagement policy requires payment for services and costs associated with attendance to any of the DePaul University orientation experiences regardless of final enrollment status.

Yes, attendance at on-campus orientation is required. This is how all first time DePaul students register for their first quarter of classes. It is to your advantage to attend an on-campus orientation session so that you are able to learn more about the requirements of your college program, meet with an academic advisor, register for classes, interact with current DePaul students, and find out more about college life at DePaul.

Once you're here for on-campus orientation, attendance at all of the sessions is required. The sessions offered during the program are critical to your success and if you miss any or all portions of the program you may forfeit your ability to meet with an academic advisor and register for classes. If extenuating circumstances prevent you from being able to attend the program for which you are scheduled, kindly call us before your on-campus orientation session so that we can try to reschedule you for another program.

To fully participate in the on-campus orientation, please bring:

  • A pen and notepad (to take notes)

  • A picture ID

  • Your Campus Connection user ID and password

  • Your immunization records (if not previously submitted)

  • A copy of your final transcript (if not already sent to the Office of Admission)

  • Sweatshirt or light jacket (meeting rooms tend to be cold)

To complete online orientation, log on to Blue Demon Domain and follow the Next Step checklist item to complete online orientation.

The placement process can be completed anywhere: at home, school, or from any place with a computer and an internet connection. When you are ready to begin your placement process, log in to Blue Demon Domain using your DePaul user ID and password and select Placement Process from the Next Steps checklist.

For detailed information about the placement process and exemptions, visit here. For specific questions about the placement process, please contact Student Records at dpcl@depaul.edu or 312.362.8610.

Sessions for parents and family members run concurrent to the student on-campus orientation sessions. While the sessions take place at the same time, most of the two program activities are separate. To register your parent(s) and/or guest(s), be sure to complete the "Guest Registration" section of the online reservation form within Blue Demon Domain.
