Project Summary:
In this GLE project, students from DePaul University worked with a diverse international group of students from Coventry University in the United Kingdom to consider how media texts are interpreted across national contexts. Small groups of students from each university shared media texts from their home countries, providing reflection questions for their international partners to consider. After discussing their respective responses to their partners’ media texts, the groups created audio visual projects reflecting on how one’s national, gendered, classed, and sexual identities impact how they understand media texts.

- Students understood ways in which cultural norms/practices in production cultures inform value systems embedded in media.
- Students identified unique cultural components present in mediated constructions of identity (e.g. gender diversity, class, sexuality, gender identity, disability etc.).
- Students recognized and analyzed how one's reception/interpretation of texts varies depending upon one's own cultural experiences.
- Students demonstrated an ability to recognize, appreciate, and articulate diversity in perspectives, practices, values, and content production as they related to cultural and personal value systems.
- Students developed skills in effective communication and collaborative production with others.
- Students engaged in critical reflection and thinking from an intercultural perspective while evaluating one's own experiences.
