The Demon Surplus With A Purpose (SWAP) program is an initiative that aims to educate students on the ways in which upcycling their items can help reduce waste while also providing materials for others and helping sustain a Vincentian mission here at DePaul. This initiative began in 2009 and raises money for the Office of Mission and Values' Vincentian Assistance Fund, which goes to directly help students in emergent need. All items left over are donated to an array of nonprofits in the Chicagoland area.
Past Year Recaps
Thanks to the collaboration between Housing Services, Office of Mission and Values and Residential Education, yearly Demon SWAP events have been very successful.
In 2016, the SWAP raised $4,362.58, a new record! In 2015, the SWAP shop raised a total of $3,155.05, also up from $2,039.53 in 2014. Money raised each year went to the Vincentian Assistance Fund, and the remaining items that were unsold were donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and local charities.
Each year we look for individuals who can volunteer time during finals week to gather and sort items that are received. We also look for student, faculty and staff volunteers to work the actual event. This volunteering is eligible for most fraternity/sorority, school or work service hours. Watch for details posted in residence halls and on social media.
