Online Teaching Evaluations

What instruments are used

Instruments used at DePaul to perform online teaching evaluations are customizable by each academic unit and, to a certain extent, by  each faculty member. The general structure of each instrument consists of:

  • Common University questions

  • College questions (if any)

  • Department questions (if any)

  • Program questions (if any)

  • Up to 5 additional questions per course, customized by each individual faculty member.

Common University Questions

As of Fall 2017-18, there are 6 questions included in every instrument used for course evaluations at DePaul. You can view these questions by downloading the following PDF: 6 Common University Questions.

Previously, until Summer 2017, there were 5 different questions included in every instrument. The previous set of university-wide questions are available here: 5 Common University Questions.

College, Department, and Program Questions

These questions are created at the local academic unit level. Information can be obtained from the College offices, the Department offices, and the Program directors.

Adding Your Own Questions

The system offers the possibility to each faculty to add up to 5 questions to the evaluation of each of their classes. You can add likert-scale questions or open ended questions. Likert scale questions must utilize pre-populated scales. If you do not find an appropriate scale in the system for your questions please contact ote@depaul.edu. Precise instructions on how to add questions are found on this document

You will receive an email from the system at the beginning of week 7 in the quarter (beginning of week 13 for the College of Law) announcing that the system is open for your customization. You will have two weeks to add your questions to the evaluation during the regular academic year, one week during Summer sessions. Please note that after 40 minutes of inactivity you'll be logged out of the OTE system. You are encouraged to think about your questions carefully before entering the system and prepare them in a separate text document. Cutting and pasting from a text document instead of typing questions from scratch will be easier and faster.

If you need inspiration on what kinds of questions you might want to ask, download and view a guide on questions to consider asking your students.

How are evaluations administered

Course evaluations at DePaul are conducted entirely online and are available to students via mobile devices. To help raise rates of return, faculty are strongly encouraged to allow students in face-to-face courses to fill out evaluations during class time, using a mobile device. Here are some recommendations on how to handle the process, according to a policy developed by Faculty Council in collaboration with Academic Affairs:

  • Alert students in advance of the scheduled day of evaluation, so that they can plan to bring a mobile device to class. Faculty members may want to include this information in their syllabi.

  • Allow at least 15 minutes for the evaluations.

  • Leave the room while students are completing the evaluations.

  • Encourage students without a mobile device to find a publicly available DePaul computer to complete the evaluations.

  • To share instructions with students, use the computer in your classroom to display the instructions below.

Access to OTE-Blue
