Provost's Award for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Overview

The Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion requests proposals for the Provost's Award for Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion program.  This program was developed in 2020-2021 by Cindy Pickett, Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Purpose

The overall purpose of this award is to recognize an individual faculty member or group of faculty who have demonstrated excellence in the pursuit of diversity, equity, and inclusion at DePaul.  

The award is announced at the University Convocation each autumn.  Awardees receive a plaque, and the awardee's name is added to a roster of award winners in the Executive Offices. The award also carries a taxable stipend of $2000.

Eligibility

All full-time and part-time faculty at DePaul University are eligible for the award.  The selection committee will bestow one award each year, but may increase or decrease the number of awards in any given year depending the pool of nominees.  A faculty member who receives a Provost's Excellence Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion may not be selected again in the five years immediately following.

Selection Committee

The selection committee will be comprised of the following individuals:

  • The Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • The Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Equity
  • Two Faculty Council representatives
  • A Student Government Association (SGA) representative
  • A Staff Council Representative

Selection Criteria

The following will be used to select awardees:

  • The level of impact of the nominee's contribution for the campus and/or community as a whole.
  • The relative merit of the contribution to a critical area of campus diversity, equity, or inclusion.
  • The length/duration of contribution.
  • The potential of the award to model exemplary practices for others.

Examples of Activities

The following are examples of activities that could fall under the scope of this award.  Please note that this is not an exhaustive list.

  • Innovative initiatives for increasing the pool of diverse applicants among student, staff, or faculty ranks.
  • The creation of novel programming to foster discussions of racial equity, social justice, cultural inclusion, and related topics.
  • Excellence in building campus-local community relationships that broaden the participation of underrepresented groups.
  • Revamping curricula to feature the scholarship of diverse voices and perspectives.
  • Exemplary scholarship having a major impact on campus diversity, equity, or inclusion.
  • Significant contributions to the success of campus-based outreach efforts.
  • Advocating on behalf of a particular cause or group.
  • Working to change policy and processes to promote greater equity and/or inclusion.

Nomination Instructions and Deadline

To submit a nomination, please email the following documents to the Interim Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Valerie Johnson to valerie.c.johnson@depaul.edu, by 5:00 pm on Friday, April 14, 2023.

  • Nominee's CV or other biographical summary
  • At least 1, but no more than 3 letters of support
  • Documentation of the achievement.  The documentation of achievement is an overview provided by the nominee(s) of their accomplishments in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion at DePaul.  This section should be no more than 2 pages (single-spaced).
Anyone in the DePaul community (faculty, student, or staff) may nominate a faculty member for this award.  Self-nominations are also accepted.  Nominees are encouraged to resubmit their nomination materials if they are not selected in a given year.
