On July 16, 2015, the IACUC approved a holding protocol and its companion SOP, which details the procedures that will be followed when animals are to be held on the IACUC approved holding protocol. The holding protocol allows for animals to be housed at DePaul and to receive standard daily care and feeding (as appropriate) until an investigator secures IACUC approval for their protocol specifying the use of those animals. For complete details, see the Policies & Procedures webpage for a copy of the SOP.

Announcement: Revised AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals: 2013 Edition. (posted 4-29-13)

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has released the AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals: 2013 Edition. This edition replaces the AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals: 2007 Edition.

The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), federal agency that oversees IACUCs, has already encouraged IACUCs to begin using the updated AVMA Guidelines when reviewing proposed IACUC protocols. OLAW is requiring that all institutions under their purview implement the updated Guidelines by September 1, 2013. DePaul’s IACUC will begin using the updated AVMA Guidelines as of May 1, 2013. This means that all ongoing and newly proposed IACUC activities will be subject to the revised AVMA Guidelines.
