When DePaul launched the Global Learning Experience (GLE) program in 2013, we were one of few early pioneers of this pedagogy. Seven years and over 200 GLE courses later, DePaul is now a globally established leader in the field of virtual exchange - collaborative online international learning. While many institutions in the US and around the world are now discovering virtual exchange as a result of the COVID -19 pandemic, DePaul can rely on a vast experience in the field. As a result, our Workshop on Virtual Exchange (VE) Design and Implementation, facilitated by staff from the Center for Teaching and Learning, attracted participants from a number of other institutions of higher education.
This winter 2021, DePaul’s GLE team welcomed almost 70 participants into the workshop, a three-week long intensive faculty development program, which trains professors interested in implementing VE projects into their classes. During the workshop, participants were exposed to the main features of VE pedagogy, gained direct experience with the tools, techniques, challenges and opportunities encountered during a VE project, and addressed the planning and implementation of VE projects from multiple perspectives: technological, pedagogical, linguistic, and intercultural. During this training cycle, in addition to DePaul faculty, we welcomed participants from University of California Santa Cruz and their international partners, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and their international partners, Morgan State University, Sinclair Community College, and a number of faculty from other institutions across the world.
