Welcoming Dr. James Dorsett to International Student & Scholars Services

James Dorsett
This May, Global Engagement was delighted to welcome our new Director of International Student and Scholar Services, Dr. James Dorsett.  James has had a long career in international education, working in international education offices throughout the US, including stints at universities in Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan (twice) and Iowa.  Most recently, James headed the office at an art and design college in Baltimore, MD.  Originally from Texas, James had his first taste of international travel when he lived on an egg farm in the Netherlands.  Upon his return to the US he started his undergraduate work in History and English at Baylor University.  This first experience whetted James’ appetite for international travel and gave him a career direction.  Since that first experience, James has lived and worked in the Netherlands, Germany and Russia.

Now, back in the Midwest, James and his wife Martha are enjoying all that Chicago has to offer.  “My wife and I are enjoying learning about the various Chicago neighborhoods with all their great things to see and do and wonderful restaurants to sample.  We are having a great time getting to know the Chicago public library system and are looking forward to going to a number of plays and musical performances. In Baltimore we lived near the symphony and look forward to attending the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.”

When not out and about on the lakefront or exploring the city, James is an avid reader of history, science fiction and mysteries.  James is also an active runner, lacing up his sneakers several times a week.  James continues to be a world traveler, excited to visit many places around the world.  Last year, he and Martha traveled to Italy to celebrate their 30th anniversary.  They traveled around the country, spending the most time in Venice (be sure to ask to see his gondola tie)!  Though they haven’t planned their next trip yet, the Balkans, Portugal and sites of ancient history all make the list.

James has been getting to know the ISS and Global Engagement staff (who “are wonderful” in his words),  and he has been busy building relationships with university stakeholders across campuses. As a leader in our holistic efforts to support international students, James is really looking forward to learning about our students’  lives, academic plans and career aspirations, so that he can best contribute to their success.
