What to Pack

It's time to pack your bags! As you decide what to bring to Chicago and what to leave home, we recommend that you bring only as much as you can carry alone all at one time around one city block!

Pack in your carry-on bag

Immigration Materials

  • Passport, Visa, I-20 or DS-2019
  • Proof of SEVIS payment
  • Documentation of financial support
  • Documentation of health insurance

Money

  • Cash
  • Traveler’s Checks
  • Cash/Debit cards and credit cards

Health Records and Medications

  • Records of required immunizations for yourself and people traveling with you
  • Prescription drugs to last you two months
  • Medical records to give your new physician (preferably in English)
  • List of allergies

Correspondence from DePaul University

  • Letter of admission
  • Housing assignment if given (if living off campus, bring your address)
  • Orientation information
  • Contact information for ISS​: (312) 362-8376
  • Contact information for DePaul Public Safety: (773) 325-7777 (available 24 hours/day)

Other Items

  • Laptop or tablet if you have one (make sure you back up all the data that is on your computer)
  • Small electronic items such as a digital camera, iPod, calculator, etc.
  • Clothing and toiletries: enough for a few days just in case your luggage is lost

Pack in your checked bag

  • Clothes that will suit the Chicago climate (hot summer; cold winter)
  • At least one pair of good walking shoes
  • Important books
  • List of emergency phone numbers for both home and DePaul University
  • Make sure there is a card with your Chicago address inside each suitcase you are carrying
