The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) provides you as a student with certain rights in regards to your education records. FERPA governs the release and access of education records maintained by DePaul or any educational institution.

When you turn 18 or begin attending a postsecondary institution regardless of age, you acquire FERPA rights. FERPA rights transfer to you beginning the first day of the first term of enrollment at DePaul.

FERPA is a law that applies to all institutions that receive any kind of funding, such as financial aid or research grants, administered by the Department of Education. Failure to comply with the law might result in our loss of funds from the Department.

An Education Record is a record that is directly related to a student and maintained by the university. An Education Record can exist in any media, including handwritten notes, print, digital, audio, video, photograph, film, etc.
