Kathryn Stieber is vice president, general counsel and secretary of DePaul University. Stieber serves as an advisor and counselor to DePaul’s Board of Trustees, its president, provost, executive vice president, and other officers on legal, governance, strategic, risk management and policymaking issues affecting the institution.


As general counsel, Stieber leads a team of six attorneys with expertise in a variety of subjects relevant to higher education. Together they provide legal advice and counsel to the university on a wide range of legal matters, including regulatory compliance, real estate, advancement, student and employment issues, athletics, risk management, litigation, contracts, intellectual property, privacy, policy and sponsored research.

As secretary, Stieber is an executive officer of the university and leads the team that manages and facilitates the business of DePaul’s Board of Trustees.

Stieber joined DePaul in 2005 and served as deputy general counsel from 2007–2020. Prior to joining DePaul, Stieber was an associate attorney with the law firm Jones Day, where she focused on labor and employment matters, and served as a law clerk to the United States Magistrate Judge Jane J. Boyle (N.D. Tex.). Stieber received her JD, cum laude, from Southern Methodist University School of Law and she received her BA fr​om Northwestern University.​
