DePaul is the number one private university destination for transfers in the state of Illinois and a recognized leader in transfer student success. With thousands of students transferring to DePaul each year—they make up nearly half of new undergraduate students in a typical year—transfers are an integral part of the university’s campus community and enrollment mix.
To recognize this important group of students, EMM’s Office of Transfer Admission spearheaded the inaugural National Transfer Student Week at DePaul, which took place Oct. 9-13, 2017. Established by the
National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students, the week of celebrations honors transfer students across the country and the professionals who help transition them to their new campuses, from admission counselors to financial aid officers.
“DePaul is deeply committed to transfer students,” shares Michael Espinoza, associate director of Transfer Admission. “We wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to honor our transfers and let them know how much we value them.”
The hub of activities took place in the Office of Undergraduate Admission’s Joan Wish Welcome Center on the Loop campus, in concurrence with
accelerated transfer admission events. Prospective and current transfer students enjoyed refreshments and giveaway items throughout the week. They also had the opportunity to meet transfer student ambassadors and sign a virtual transfer student guestbook.
To highlight the week and invite students to join the celebration, the Office of Transfer Admission sent out special communications to prospective and admitted transfer students, focusing outreach efforts on social media with the event’s official hashtag: #TransferStudentWeek.
“We see this week as an opportunity to shine a spotlight on our transfer students,” says Espinoza. “Our office managed the festivities this year, but our goal and vision for coming years is to partner with other offices to make this a more visible campus-wide celebration and a lasting tradition at DePaul.”
