DePaul’s commitment to its community college partners and transfer student population was nationally recognized with its selection as an inaugural member of the
2016 Phi Theta Kappa Excellence in Community College Transfer Honor Roll. Phi Theta Kappa, the oldest and largest honor society recognizing students pursuing two-year degrees, chose only 40 colleges nationwide to receive the honor; DePaul was one of only two recognized from Illinois.
The honor roll, an annual recognition program introduced this year, honors the top four-year colleges and universities creating dynamic pathways for community college transfer students. Selection is based on a range of criteria from student engagement and aid to collaboration and partnerships.
“DePaul is unique in that we have specific departments creating tools and resources to raise awareness of DePaul’s brand among transfer students and partner institutions,” said David Villarroel, assistant director of Community College Partnerships. “This honor showcases how much DePaul cares for its transfer students.”
The honor also gives DePaul additional exposure to
Phi Theta Kappa’s (PTK) 3 million members and advisors worldwide. DePaul received special recognition at the annual PTK convention in National Harbor, Md., on April 7, 2016, with an estimated 4,000 students and two-year college administrators in attendance. Selected institutions are also recognized with a special honor roll designation in the
PTK online database and an advertisement in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
The application process was a collaborative effort between EMM’s Community College Partnerships and Transfer Admission departments. DePaul’s application highlighted the innovative programs designed specifically for transfer students like DePaul Admission Partnership Program (DAPP) and PTK scholarships.
Transfer students are an integral component of DePaul’s enrollment profile. In 2014-15, transfer students comprised 49 percent of new undergraduate student enrollment (2,472 students), with 65 percent coming from community colleges. Over the course of an entire year, DePaul enrolls nearly the same amount of freshman and transfer students. More information on transfer enrollment can be found on
EMM’s Fall 2015 Enrollment Summary website.
