For DePaul transfer students, the Joan Wish Welcome Center in the Loop was the place to be Oct. 15-19, 2018. EMM’s Office of Transfer Admission was celebrating the second annual National Transfer Student Week, hosting daily activities for the occasion.
Throughout the week, more than 100 students stopped in for games, prizes, refreshments, treats and giveaways. The festivities kicked off Monday with a scavenger hunt competition around campus, and a bingo game—and ended with cookie decorating on Friday, where students could also pick up information about different resources on campus. A number of university offices donated giveaways, resource materials and fun prizes for the week.
Other activities included a “Discover DAPP” event for prospective transfers to learn about the DePaul Admission Partnership Program, a t-shirt swap where students could receive free DePaul swag when they brought in a t-shirt from their previous college and a “coffee and conversation” event in which students could provide written testimonials of their transfer experience. Even DePaul’s mascot, DIBS, dropped in to take photos with students.
Meanwhile on social media, a transfer student hosted the IAMDEPAUL Instagram account to share the week’s celebrations and his perspective on being a student at DePaul.
“We are so excited to celebrate our transfer students,” shares Heidi Wirth, assistant director of Transfer Admission. “Next year we hope to expand the celebrations to the Welcome Center in Lincoln Park, and we hope more university offices will participate to make the week more visible around campus. It’s a great opportunity to recognize how much we value having transfer students in our community.”
In fall 2018, DePaul welcomed 1,272 new transfer students to campus.
