Schultz received his B.A. in English Literature at Grinnell College, and an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies and a Ph.D. in Islamic History from the University of Chicago. He is the author of several publications on the monetary history of the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and Syria (1250-1517 CE) and the wider Mediterranean World. Schultz was inducted to the Society of Vincent de Paul Professors in 2005 as a member of the second cohort. He retired from the Society in June 2020 but remains a fulltime member of the History Department. Schultz has been a research affiliate at the American University in Beirut, Waseda University in Tokyo, as well as a senior research fellow at the Annemarie Schimmel Kolleg: History and Society during the Mamluk Era (1250-1517), at the University of Bonn. His service to the field includes holding the offices of Secretary and Treasurer for Middle East Medievalists (an international organization of scholars), an associate editor of the journal Mamluk Studies Review, and a numismatic consultant to the US Department of State, museums, and archaeological excavations in the Levant. Grant support for his research has been provided by the American Numismatic Society, the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Royal Numismatic Society of the United Kingdom. In recognition of his scholarship in Islamic numismatics, Schultz was named a Fellow of the American Numismatic Society, the foremost academic society in this country devoted to the study and analysis of coinage. Schultz has taught a wide variety of courses in the history curriculum and in the Liberal Studies Program. He has been active in encouraging students and faculty to make use of DePaul's Special Collections in the Library. He has a longstanding involvement with DePaul's Study Abroad Program, having directed short-term programs in Turkey, Morocco, and an innovative first-year program which links a Focal Point Seminar course with a spring break excursion to Jordan. Schultz has served as Chair of the History Department and as Executive Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He received the college's Cortelyou-Lowry Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2019.
