Mary Jeanne Larrabee has been a Professor of Philosophy from 1997 to the present. She is currently the Director of the Peace, Justice & Conflict Studies Program (since 2006). She served as the first Director of the Women’s Studies Program in 1984-88. She is also a Certified Focusing Trainer, as of 1998, and is bringing the skills of Community Focusing as psychosocial wellness tools to various organizations in Haiti as part of the Worldwide Vincentian Family’s celebration of the 350th anniversary of the deaths of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac. Her research areas deal with the analysis of experiences through phenomenology and include the experiences of sex and gender, of racialized identities, of persons living on the margins such as those dealing with poverty and disability, and of the spiritualities of Buddhist and Christian ethics and practice. Her teaching has been at every level, from courses on Philosophy and Film (200-level) and on Edmund Husserl (graduate level) in the Philosophy Department, to Senior and Junior Seminars on dreams, the body, postmodernist binaries, and multiculturalism in the Honors Program, to a Discover Chicago on the arts and creativity and a Focal Point on nature in the First Year Program. She served a year as President of the Faculty Council and was chair of the Faculty Council’s Status of Faculty committee and member of various other F.C. and LA&S committees, as well as university task forces, advisory councils, and strategic planning committees.
