Kathryn Grant

Kathryn Grant is a Professor of Clinical Child Psychology and serves as a teaching faculty member at DePaul Family and Community Services. Through her service learning courses in the Psychology Department and her clinical courses in DePaul Family and Community Services, she integrates teaching, research and service related to underserved children and adolescents exposed to severe and chronic stress. Kathryn’s research is focused on two areas. The first is basic research designed to reveal the effects of stressful life experiences on young people as well as processes that explain or influence stress effects. As part of her basic research agenda, Kathryn and collaborators are working to develop a taxonomy of stressors that will provide a conceptual and empirical framework for linking specific types of stressors with specific processes and outcomes. Kathryn’s second area of research is applied research designed to translate basic research findings into effective interventions for youth exposed to severe and chronic stress (e.g., youth residing in urban poverty). As part of this research, Kathryn and collaborators are developing two interventions that scaffold youth coping efforts through connections to supportive adults and protective settings (Cities Mentor Project and Cities Mother Daughter Project). Kathryn has published more than 60 scholarly papers on these topics, and her work has been supported by grants from the Institute of Education Sciences, the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the William T. Grant Foundation. Kathryn has held many leadership and service positions including Director of Clinical Training at DePaul and Member at Large for Science and Practice for the American Psychological Association’s Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology.
