Carolyn Bronstein, Ph.D. is Professor of Media Studies and Associate Dean of Enrollment and Strategic Initiatives in the College of Communication. She is also an affiliated faculty member in the American Studies program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She teaches and writes in the area of feminist media studies, with an emphasis on the representation of women in popular culture and the efforts of grassroots groups to challenge visual stereotypes. Her most recent book, Battling Pornography: The American Feminist Anti-Pornography Movement, 1976- 1986, published by Cambridge University Press, received the 2012 Emily Toth Award for the Best Single Work in Women’s Studies from the Popular Culture Association. The University of Massachusetts Press will publish her coedited volume, Porno Chic and the Sex Wars: American Sexual Representation in the 1970s, in winter 2017. At DePaul, Bronstein teaches classes that emphasize the cultural effects of media on society, the role of media in social movements, and the relationships among media use and emotion, cognition and behavior. She has won numerous awards for her teaching and scholarship, including the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Quality of Instruction Council in 2010, and the Spirit of Inquiry Award from the University Research Council in 2012. She is the founding faculty director of the OpEd Project Public Voices fellowship program at DePaul, which has graduated 60 faculty and staff fellows since 2013. Bronstein is a fellow of the Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy and the Institute for Diverse Leadership of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She is an affiliated faculty member of the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University. Bronstein holds a BA and MA in Communication from Stanford University and a PhD in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.​
