Update on The Bean operations
February 25, 2025
DePaul is committed to providing our students with healthy, safe food on campus. All dining service vendors on campus must meet the City of Chicago’s health code standards, and inspections are routinely conducted.
The Bean location in the Schmitt Academic Center (SAC) was temporarily closed Feb. 20, 2025, following a City of Chicago health inspection. The Bean is an independent, local business. It is not operated by the university or its dining plan foodservice provider, Chartwells.
The Bean has now reopened: The vendor made updates to sanitation and protocol, and on Monday, Feb. 24, health inspectors returned and approved that The Bean reopen only to serve packaged goods. Requirements put forth by the City of Chicago for The Bean in order to resume serving fresh beverage items in SAC are being assessed.
It’s important to note that no pests were found on site at The Bean, and the required Pest Control log was shared with the health inspector.
We thank students for their patience and invite you to access fresh beverage service at other locations on campus, including:
- Independent operator The Bean location in the Ray Meyer Fitness Center
- Chartwells continues to operate coffee service in these locations:
Brownstone’s in the Lincoln Park Student Center
The coffee shop in McGowan South, across the Quad from SAC
A coffee shop in the School of Music
