Remarks by A. Gabriel Esteban, Ph.D., at the announcement of DePaul’s 12th president
Feb. 16, 2017
It is an honor and a privilege to be here today. We would like to express our gratitude for the warm welcome. We are especially thankful for the warm weather. My wife and I are extremely happy to be here at DePaul.
I am especially grateful to have Father Richardson here this morning. It is an honor to be following in both his and Father Holtschneider’s footsteps.
This morning, I shared breakfast with DePaul’s Vincentians in residence, and my time with them affirmed how grateful I am to be surrounded by so many individuals with a profound commitment to the university’s distinct educational mission.
As Bill mentioned, my wife and I grew up in the Philippines, and it was a dream come true for us to come to the U.S. for our studies.
We were fortunate to get scholarships to pursue our education, and our academic journey took us across the country from Hawaii to California to Texas to Arkansas to New Jersey and now to Chicago, our favorite city. We were blessed to personally witness the transformative power of higher education.
Chicago also happens to be the home of our daughter, Ysabella, who is currently a medical resident at the University of Chicago.
DePaul’s Vincentian and Catholic values, the commitment to serve the public good and give people of all ethnicities and backgrounds the opportunity to be transformed through a college education resonate strongly with our own values and beliefs. It is truly a privilege to serve as the university’s first lay leader.
I look forward to the opportunity to continue to enhance DePaul’s mission and excellent academic reputation in partnership with you.
I extend my deepest gratitude to Father Holtschneider. Much has been accomplished here, thanks to your leadership as president.
St. Vincent de Paul once said, “He always blesses humble beginnings much more than those accompanied by a lot of show.”
I am humbled to stand before you today, and we are blessed to join you as a member of the DePaul community.
Thank you, and have a great day.
