College of Computing and Digital Media

DePaul’s College of Computing and Digital Media (CDM) offers a wide range of practical and innovative programs that respond to market demands for new technology and media skills.

  • DePaul's College of Computing and Digital Media (CDM) is organized into three schools: the School of Cinematic Arts, the School of Computing and the School of Design. The College’s Institute for Professional Development (IPD) offers certificate programs in IT.
  • CDM enrolled 2,979 undergraduate and 1,812 graduate students for Fall quarter of the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • The college has 120 full-time faculty and numerous adjunct lecturers who come from distinguished research, academic and industry backgrounds, and who teach more than 700 courses annually.
  • CDM offers 16 undergraduate, 25 graduate, and 2 doctoral programs, with cirricula that are reflective and responsive to the latest industry trends, technologies, and ideas across the computing and digital media spectrum.
  • CDM's Institute for Professional Development (IPD) offers certificate programs in areas of information technology ranging in length from two to eleven weeks for IT professionals. IPD offers certificate programs in artificial intelligence, big data, data science, cloud computing, cyber security, IT management, and mobile and web development. More than 17,000 professionals have completed IPD programs.
  • Eleven graduate degree programs can be completed entirely online and two undergraduate programs are available to transfer students for online degree completion. Whether students are on-campus or online, one hundred percent of CDM lectures-from audio to video to whiteboard writing and supplemental materials-are captured and available online.
  • CDM’s LA Quarter Program offers a unique opportunity for students to experience the inner workings of Hollywood first hand. This 10-week immersion program is structured around living in Los Angeles, taking classes on a historic studio lot, and interning at high profile companies that align with students' professional aspirations. Through this experience, students learn how to navigate the studio system and build a network of professional contacts that will help them leave an indomitable mark on the entertainment industry.
  • The School of Cinematic Arts teamed up with Cinespace Chicago, the city's premier movie studio, to provide students with production experience in the midst of a working studio. The university's dedicated space is 32,000 square feet and includes over 17,500 square feet of shooting space on three stages, multiple free standing sets, extensive lighting and grip equipment, a green screen cyclorama, sound equipment, scenic shop, editing suites, classrooms and collaboration rooms, and expansive storage and work areas.
  • CDM is home to the Idea Realization Lab (IRL), a 4,500 square foot student-driven makerspace built for the DePaul community that encourages the pursuit of thinking through making.
  • The DePaul Center for Data Science (CDS) is an applied research center that advances the discipline of data science as a tool for solving today's most challenging problems. The Center is a joint venture involving faculty from the school of Computing and the Department of Marketing. It combines the curricular resources of these entities in data mining, predictive analytics and business intelligence.
  • CDM’s Divergent Design Lab is a research and design lab focused on emerging technology, user experience, and contemporary social landscapes. Current research involves cyber security, vulnerability, malware, and social cognition. Divergent Design Lab has been awarded funding from the NSA.
  • CDM’s Innovation Development Lab (iD-Lab) serves as a model for university and corporate partnerships in the area of technology innovation. The iD-Lab serves as a space to build the bridges between DePaul and companies to grow into a leading technology innovation and research hub. Partners include companies such as AllState, Bosch, CareerBuilder, Abbitt, and Digital Mint. Current work in the lab focuses on three primary focus areas: development of technology innovations projects with member companies, education through training, workshops and practical experiences; and research on technology innovation.
  • The Technology of Social Good Research and Design Lab brings together faculty, students, and other collaborators to design, build, and study tools with the goal of fostering equitable education and empowerment in urban communities.
  • The overarching objective of the Robotics and Medical Engineering (RoME) lab is to bring together the expertise of computer and engineering to better meet real-life societal challenges including, but not limited to, healthcare, disaster response, and space exploration through research and development of next generation cyber-physical systems. The lab also focuses on understanding the fundamentals of muscular biological entities such as octopi and squid to help develop next generation robotics aimed at enabling challenging surgical procedures.
  • The new in-2018 Virtual and Augmented Design Lab (VAD) focuses on researching and developing spatial VR games using Vive and Oculus + Touch, and AR games on Microsoft HoloLens, iPhones using ARKit, and Android devices.
  • CDM has several specialized labs, including gaming, graphic design, physical computing, editing, sound, animation, networking and security, motion capture, iterative design, and general computer classroom labs. CDM also has a dedicated gallery to showcase faculty and student work.
