Frequently Asked Questions

Why is registration so important?

In order to attend the Family Weekend activities, you MUST register, preferably by the pre-registration deadline. This deadline allows us time to customize your family's materials for the weekend and ensure we order enough food and materials for everyone attending the weekend.

Any suggestion for hotel rooms/accommodations?

Make reservations early! While there are a number of hotels in the Loop and Lincoln Park campuses, they tend to fill very quickly. Please make your plans well in advance to ensure lodging for your family.

Through DePaul's Demon Discounts program (discounts.depaul.edu), many hotels in Lincoln Park and the Loop offer discounted rates for those affiliated with DePaul, including your student!

Will I be receiving a registration confirmation?

When you register for Family Weekend online, a confirmation will be generated for you and sent to the e-mail address that you provided. You will not receive a confirmation in the mail. You will also receive an email the week of the event to Family Weekend to share any pre-arrival information you may need. In the meantime, please continue to check this website for any updates and additions to the schedule of events.

The registration website says I can no longer purchase tickets? Can I still attend Family Weekend?

Absolutely! Parents and family members may register for Family Weekend on-site; however, to assist with our effective planning, registration advance is preferred.
Registration is required for admission to Family Weekend events.

When do I need to arrive?

Family Weekend kicks off first thing in the morning Friday and continues through the end of the day Sunday. Events are scheduled throughout the entire weekend. While guests may arrive at any time during the weekend, we suggest making plans to arrive in the city on Friday morning and departing Sunday afternoon to take full advantage of the weekend's events.

Where do we go when we arrive on campus to pick up information and ask questions for the weekend?

Your first stop should be Family Weekend Headquarters! We'll have a packet of materials for your family to enjoy the weekend. Additionally, we'll have staff to answer questions, offer suggestions for local restaurants and eateries, and complete on-site registrations for the weekend.
Family Weekend Headquarters is located on the first floor of the Lincoln Park Student Center, in the Atrium.

We will share lots of information and answer questions about Family Weekend for new families during our summer orientation programs. If you are unable to attend or have additional questions, please email us at parents@depaul.edu or call our office at (773) 325-7360.

May siblings and other family members attend?

Yes, of course! DePaul's Family Weekend provides parents and family members with opportunities to experience their student's life on campus. In particular, we invite younger siblings to take advantage of the chance to get an inside look at DePaul University, and as prospective students, meet with representatives from Admissions and other campus offices. Given your anticipated schedule for the day, please use your best judgment in terms of bringing very young siblings along for events.

How do I reserve tickets to the Welcome Reception and the Sunday Brunch?

Tickets for these events are included in the registration fee. If you are interested in attending only Sunday's brunch (and no other Family Weekend events), please use our ticketing site to purchase "Brunch Only Add-On" Tickets.

What is the weather like in October in Chicago?

Weather during this month can vary widely -- sometimes it's unseasonably warm, and others can get downright cold. It's best to wear layers.

Why is the Family Weekend scheduled during this time of the year?

Family Weekend is scheduled during the sixth week of the quarter. This is a critical time when students still working to find their place/make connections with DePaul are most in need of support. This gives you a chance to come to campus and encourage your student to get involved, take advantage of the resources we offer during the weekend to make those connections, and learn about what campus life is like for your student.

Do students have the day off on Friday?

Students do not have the day off on Friday. However, there will be plenty of time for the students to spend time with their parents and there will be a ton of activities and programs to take advantage of throughout the weekend. Please be aware that your student may have exams the following week and may need some time to study or work during the weekend.

Are exams cancelled for Parent & Family Weekend?

Classes operate as usual surrounding Parent & Family Weekend. Please talk with your student before you arrive on campus to check on his or her workload for the weekend. You are welcome to attend activities with or without your student.

What is the registration fee used for?

Putting on a weekend of events for hundreds of families is an enormous and expensive task. Your registration fee offsets the costs of the weekend's events (printing, food, staffing, facilities, parking, etc). Please ensure you get the most out of the weekend and join us for these wonderful events! We make every effort to keep the registration costs low so as many families as possible can enjoy a fun-filled weekend with their student at DePaul.
