Staying safe on campus

Chicago is a large, population-dense city, and crime is no stranger here or in other cities like Chicago. We usually get questions about what DePaul does to ensure the community’s safety or to alert the community to safety issues around our campuses. These questions are especially common among new students and families—and this year, our new students include many second year students and students that transferred to DePaul during the 2020-21 academic year. Following are some important things you should know about campus safety at DePaul.

1. Safety alerts: DePaul University's department of Public Safety issues safety alerts via email to all DePaul community members (faculty, staff and students) whenever a significant crime or a pattern/series of crimes has been committed on or near either of our campuses, whether or not a DePaul community member was involved. While parents and family members do not receive the email alerts, you can review, at any time, the safety alerts web page to see issued alerts

2. Safety escorts: The DePaul University Public Safety Department provides an escort service for students, staff and faculty whose circumstances require them to travel alone within campus boundaries, in isolated areas after dark, during times of low activity on campus or whenever there is concern for one's own personal safety. The escorts are available on the Lincoln Park campus only. You can get full details on the escort policy here.

3. Blue Boxes: A number of well-marked exterior call boxes are located throughout the Lincoln Park campus. These emergency call boxes can be used to report a crime, a fire, or any type of emergency. Learn more and see a map of the boxes here.

4. Safety Tips: In an urban environment crime is a fact of life. Your student’s effort to avoid becoming a victim is a large step towards beating the odds of victimization. Alertness, confidence, and trust in their instincts are some of their best resources. Review some safety tips here.

Should your student have questions about other services that Public Safety provides, or general safety on and around campus, they can contact Public Safety at 773-325-7777 in Lincoln Park or 312-362-8400 in the Loop.
