​Purpose
The QIC award for Global Engagement (QIC-GE) is intended for DePaul tenured and tenure-track faculty members who have a concrete plan to engage with an international partner institution or faculty member to enhance their teaching practice.  Proposals must contain an explicit plan for international mobility.  Mobility can be either outbound only (DPU faculty traveling to international partner), inbound only (international partner coming to DPU), or, preferably, a combination of inbound and outbound.  The latter option does not require synchronicity of travel.

Global Engagement grants provide up to $4000 in funding that can be utilized in various ways, for example: pay for replacement cost for the faculty member; travel expenses for the DPU faculty or partner faculty; housing costs (see below for more examples).  Faculty interested in pursuing these opportunities can contact the office of the Associate Provost for Global Engagement for assistance.

Examples

  1. A DePaul faculty member invites a colleague from a partner institution to visit for part of the quarter to co-teach a portion of a class.
  2. A DePaul faculty member coordinates his/her teaching load to be down to one course the term that this Award is used and teaches a blended course during that term.  Thus, s/he can travel for 2 weeks while students are working on a project (perhaps a GLE related to the travel) and online learning tools are used during that time.  Then the research/teaching partner could come back (or vice versa) so that the DePaul faculty member and international partner can work together on research of some kind but can also maximize teaching together (i.e., the DePaul faculty member can spend some time with the international partner's students and vice versa).
  3. (Theatre School specific) A DePaul faculty member travels to meet for 1 or 2 weeks with an international partner (director or writer for instance) to begin work on a devised theatre piece.  Work continues electronically, also involving students, and the international partner then travels to Chicago for the final 2 weeks of work on the project.  Such collaboration would be both teaching and scholarship/creative activity related.  Similar structure would work in all departments of TTS.

Eligibility
Eligibility for faculty development grants is limited to full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty.  Faculty may apply for one Global Engagement Award per academic year.  In selecting awards, the council takes into account three priorities: demands on strategic plans and initiatives, applicant's record of completing projects, and how the project sustains the university.  Implementation of global engagement experiences for faculty may involve course scheduling and faculty compensation issues.  For this reason it is imperative that the faculty member coordinates with the Chair/Dean and the budget manager of the unit as appropriate.  Evidence of this coordination must be provided as a detailed support letter from the Department Chair/Dean, as appropriate, with the application.

Application Deadlines
Applications are accepted in the Fall and Winter with deadlines of October 15th and March 15th, respectively.

How to Apply
Applicants should submit the following through Campus Connect (click on "Grant Proposals" in the "Faculty Center" section) by the appropriate deadline:

  • Project Title
  • Abstract - the abstract should describe the project clearly and completely in non-technical terms
  • Work Plan & Timeline - the work plan and timeline should be thorough, realistic, and feasible. Further, the specific outcomes for the project should be articulated.
  • Budget Narrative - the budget narrative should clearly justify all requested expenses and provide sources for estimated costs.
  • Budget Form - the budget form should account for each item of expense discussed in the budget narrative.
  • Tentative Syllabus

Applicants will also be asked to attach the following to their application:

  • Narrative - the narrative should describe the project in clear, non-technical language.  The narrative should also present a compelling argument in favor of the project which will include a clear description of the project's goals and objectives.  Further, the narrative should explain the relationship between the project and the applicant's teaching, research, and/or service interests.
  • Current CV
  • Endorsement Letter from the applicant's chair (where applicable) or dean.

Expectations/Requirements of Recipients
Grant recipients should keep the following in mind:

  • All spending must comply with the council's guidelines regarding eligible and ineligible expenses.
  • Funding is for 18 months after the grant is approved.
  • The council expects projects to be completed in a timely manner and will not fund projects beyond three years.
  • A final report must be submitted within 30 days of the grant's expiration.  Failure to submit the final report will result in the faculty member being ineligible for future funding from the councils.  This report should delineate the activities conducted during the grant, describe the achievement of the project outcomes as outlined in the proposal, and list financial expenditures (include copies of all invoices over $100).
