Spam Control

DePaul University makes use of the Microsoft 365 email security service for all mail traffic entering and exiting the University. This service provides University faculty and staff with e-mail protection against spam and malware. Email messages classified as spam will be placed into the Junk Email folder in your mailbox, where it will remain for 30 days if no action is taken. You should periodically review the items in your Junk Email folder. 

If a message is from a known source, you can add the email address or domain to your Safe Senders list to ensure delivery to your Inbox.  

Add Safe Senders in Outlook

  1. Click on Junk in your Outlook ribbon
  2. Select Junk Email Options...
  3. Select the Safe Senders tab
  4. Click Add
  5. Type in email address or domain and click OK
To  add the sender of a specific message, right click the email, select Junk, and select Never Block Sender.  This will add the email address to your Safe Senders list.

Add Safe Senders in Outlook on the Web (OWA)

  1. ​Log in to OWA
  2. Click on the gear icon in the upper right
  3. Click on Options
  4. Click on Block or Allow on the left
  5. Enter the email address or doman you would like to add and click the + button
  6. Click Save at the top

Messages that you would prefer to not have delivered can also be blocked by adding the email address or domain to the Blocked Senders list.

  1. Click on Junk in your Outlook ribbon
  2. Select Junk Email Options...
  3. Select the Blocked Senders tab
  4. Click Add
  5. Type in email address or domain and click OK
To block the sender of a specific message, right click the email, select Junk, and select Block Sender.  This will add the email address to your Blocked Senders list.

  1. ​Log in to OWA
  2. Click on the gear icon in the upper right
  3. Click on Options
  4. Click on Block or Allow on the left
  5. Enter the email address or doman you would like to add and click the + button
  6. Click Save at the top

Or for individual messages you can right click on a message and select Mark as junk
The Safe and Blocked senders lists are synchronized between, and can be edited by, your Outlook desktop client and Outlook on the Web. ​​​ 

Spam messages that are sent to a resource account will be placed into the Junk Email folder that is in the resource account's mailbox. Safe and Blocked senders lists for resource accounts can be managed by owners using Outlook on the Web, following the above instructions.
