Collaborative Instruction Fellow Stipends are intended to foster interdisciplinary curricular innovation within degree-granting programs at DePaul. Collaborative stipends are granted to multiple faculty members from across local academic units and/or disciplines who are working together to develop an innovative interdisciplinary curricular enhancement such as:
- A new interdisciplinary course, courses, or program(s)
- A re-design that results in an interdisciplinary approach to an existing course, courses, or program
- A technological innovation that brings an interdisciplinary orientation to an existing course, courses, or program
- A team-taught course, courses, or program
Faculty should apply for Collaborative Instruction Fellow Stipends in teams of two or three. Successful applications will result in up to $4,000 for each faculty member involved in the project (with a maximum of three faculty members) as well as dedicated space for the team in the Loop campus for one year. Consultation and support for the process of shepherding a curricular proposal through the multi-stage approval processes of university shared governance may also be requested.
Applications must involve efforts to collaborate across academic units and these efforts must be more than what is typically expected in normal curricular revisions that are done by faculty on a regular basis.
The primary applicant must be a tenured or tenure-track faculty member who is collaborating with one or more faculty members from other academic units or departments. Only the primary applicant is required to be tenured or tenure-track. Faculty may apply for one QIC stipend per academic year. In awarding stipends, the council takes into account:
- The number of courses and/or students affected
- Centrality to strategic plans and initiatives
- Applicants’ records of completing projects
- How the project addresses market opportunities or needs of the university
Stipends provide only salary support, and so it is not necessary for applicants to submit a budget for the stipend. However, applications for collaborative grants may budget up to $250 for CTA travel between DePaul’s campuses.
Applications are accepted in the Fall and Winter with deadlines of October 15th and March 15th, respectively. Late applications cannot be accepted.
How to Apply
Applicants should submit the following through Campus Connect (click on "Grant Proposals" in the "Faculty Center" section) by the appropriate deadline:
- Project title
- Abstract — The abstract should describe the project clearly and completely in non-technical terms
- Work plan and timeline — The work plan and timeline should be thorough, realistic, and feasible. Further, the specific outcomes for the project should be articulated.
- Tentative syllabus
Applicants will also be asked to attach the following to their application:
- Narrative — The narrative should describe the project clearly and completely in non-technical terms. It should also present a compelling argument in favor of the project that will include a clear description of the project's goals and objectives, the rationale for collaboration, a description of the expected contributions of members of the team, the current status of the project, and the expected outcomes.
- Current CVs for all team members
- Endorsement letter
Expectations and Requirements of Recipients
Stipend recipients should keep the following in mind:
- Funding is for 18 months after the grant is approved.
- The council expects projects to be completed in a timely manner and will not fund projects beyond three years.
- A final report must be submitted within 30 days of the grant's expiration. Failure to submit the final report will result in the faculty member being ineligible for future funding from the councils. This report should delineate the activities conducted during the grant and describe the achievement of the project outcomes as outlined in the proposal.
