Faculty Recognition Grant Program

Faculty Recognition Grants are intended to recognize the research and creative activities of senior faculty members who have a recent history of significant research or creative accomplishments; who are currently pursuing a specific line of inquiry that shows promise of significant contributions in the future; and whose work supports DePaul’s mission.

Successful applicants will receive a $3,500 stipend and a grant of up to $5,000 that may be applied to research-related and professional development expenses for a period of 24 months following the awarding of the grant.

Eligibility is limited to full-time tenured faculty who have attained the rank of Professor.   See the Purpose section above for additional criteria.  Only self-nominations are accepted.  Faculty who have received a grant from this program may not reapply.  Faculty with support from external grants may not be eligible for a stipend, depending upon their level of external support.  (The Office of Research Services can advise faculty regarding this.)   Also, faculty who have overspent previous Council grants will not be eligible for funding until the overage is resolved.

Application Deadline

Applications will be accepted in the fall and winter, with deadlines of October 15th and March 15th, respectively.

How to Apply

Applicants are required to use the on-line proposal system established for the Councils.  Within Campus Connect, click on “Grant Proposals” in the “Faculty Center.”  Follow this link for more detailed navigation instructions:  If a Grant Proposals link does not appear in the Faculty Center, write to to request access.

Proposals must include the following:

  • Project Title
  • Abstract:  Provide a clear summary the proposal narrative, making it as accessible as possible to a general reader.
  •  Narrative: Attach a description of the applicant’s scholarly/creative accomplishments during the past five years in rank, and of the effect of these accomplishments on the applicant’s field and society at large.  Following this, include a plan for scholarship/creative activities over the next five years and a description of their potential impact.
  •  CV:  Attach current CV.
  • Budget Narrative:  Detail and justify the funding that is requested on the Budget Form.  See the following list of Eligible and Ineligible expenses for guidance regarding allowable costs:  For student assistants, include a breakout of the estimated hourly rate and the estimated number of hours to be worked along with benefits of 10% for wages to be paid to students during the summer months.   If a stipend is not requested, please note this in the Budget Narrative.  Otherwise, the stipend need not be mentioned.   The stipend may not be reallocated to increase the grant funding beyond the maximum of $5,000.
  • Budget Form:  Use the budget form to assign the anticipated expenses to DePaul budget categories.  Use the Part-Time Salaries category for wages to be paid to student assistants. Do not include the stipend in the Budget Form.

Proposals will be reviewed by the University Research Council, and all applicants will be notified of the results.

Expectations and Requirements of Grant Recipients

  • Successful applicants are expected to spend their grant funds in a manner that is generally consistent with their proposed budget.  Significant departures from the budget will require advance approval from the Office of Research Service.
  • Students assisting with funded projects may not begin work on them until their hiring process is complete.
  • A report on the project will be due one month after the project end date.  Instructions concerning what to include in the report and how to submit it will be provided.
