Membership Information

The Society of Vincent de Paul Professors reorganized during the 2007-2008 academic year with the goals of promoting the ideal of the teacher-scholar and enhancing the educational mission of the University in ways consistent with its distinctive values. The goals of the Society are promoted through initiatives proposed by society members, reflecting both the interests of the members and the overall goals of the Society. Society members are granted the title “Vincent de Paul Professor” and have access to discretionary funds to support professional development and co-curricular experiences for students. They enjoy various ceremonial privileges as well.

Applicants for membership must have a tenured appointment in one of the University’s colleges or schools and the rank of associate or full professor at the time of application, and should demonstrate:

  • evidence of a willing commitment to the mission of the Society of Vincent de Paul Professors;
  • active leadership that directly contributes to the enhancement of the University;
  • consistently outstanding classroom teaching across a broad base of students;
  • recognized and significant scholarly or artistic achievements.

When the Society chooses to consider applications for new members, an invitation for applications will be sent to all Deans early in the fall quarter, with applications typically due late in the quarter.

Application materials should include:

  • a letter of application explicitly referring to past activities relevant to the mission of the Society (no longer than 2,000 words.)

  • a current c.v.

  • evidence of teaching excellence including a list of courses taught over the past three years 

    (one class syllabus is required). This evidence may include an example of curriculum development, and summary data student evaluations for the past three years.

  • three letters of recommendation that speak to candidate qualifications. At least one of the three letters must be from a DePaul faculty member or administrator. Each of these letters should not exceed 2 pages​.

  • a letter of support from the Dean of the applicant’s college or school. (This is in addition to the three letters of recommendation.)

Please send your application materials electronically and if possible on Word document form. Applicants should not include samples of scholarly/artistic accomplishment; these should be described in the c.v. and/or letter of application. Leadership in service activities should also be apparent in the c.v. and/or described in the letter of application.

Candidates should submit their materials to the Dean of their college or school at a given deadline, who should forward them along with his or her letter of support to the Chair of the Membership Committee by the SVdPP application deadline. Applicants will be considered by the Membership Committee and the full Society, and new members will be inducted into the Society at the beginning of the next academic year.
