Types of Awards

The Office of Human Resources administers a central account for the Staff Recognition Award Program. Funds are allocated in July (beginning of the fiscal year) to each vice president and dean based on the number of full-time staff in each area. Funds not used in one fiscal year may not be rolled into the new fiscal year’s allocations.

Individual Award

An award given to an individual for a significant achievement completed on their own.

Examples of Level of Accomplishment Award Amount
One time contribution of an individual helping another for a limited number of time (e.g. assisting a co-worker meet a critical deadline over the course of a few days). $250 to $500
One time contribution of an individual who takes on additional tasks or projects not part of his/her primary duties, for a short-period of time in the unit $500 - $800
Improving an overall process for an entire department (several weeks of work) $750 to $1,000

Group Award

An award given to a group of employees for working collectively on a project or initiative that encompassed cross-functional collaboration at the department or university-wide level. The amounts may vary by individual team member commensurate with the level of individual accomplishment toward the group achievement.

Improve an overall process for a unit (several weeks of work) – Team Member (T) (T) $300 to $500
Improve an overall process for an entire department (several weeks of work) – Team Member (T); Lead the team (L) (T) $400 - $600

Improve an overall university process (several months of work) – Team Member (T); Lead the team (L) (T) $500 to $1,000
(L) $1,500 to $3,000
Implementing an entire new system (touching one department) – Team Member (T); Lead the team (L) (T) $1,000 to $1,500
(L) $1,500 to $2,000
Implementing an entire new system (touching multiple departments or the entire university) – Team Member (T); Lead the team (L) (T) $1,250 to $2,000
(L) $1,500 to $3,000

Acting/Interim Award

An award given to an individual in recognition for filling additional duties for another team member during an absence or short-term position vacancy. Acting/Interim awards are not a substitute for recording additional hours worked and non-exempt recipients are required to record all hours worked. These types of awards must be made after the accomplishment has been completed and not communicated to the employee in advance of the award.
